Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We encourage routine maintenance on your HVAC system frequently, but this doesn’t only mean annual tune-ups – it also refers to assessing your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system operating smoothly and enhance your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Today is the perfect time to check your filter, as the cooler weather comes to an end and summer is nearing. There are a lot of benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Lengthening the life and efficiency of your system
A guaranteed way to instigate a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Extra dirt that accumulates on your filter can cause your whole system to operate harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it hinder the performance of your system, but it can increase your energy costs and end with an overheated system.

Improving indoor air quality
The purpose of an air filter is that it snatches contaminants through your air system before it reaches your residence. After the filter has been in for a while, the less effective it is in catching things like dust and mold that can affect the health and comfort of your home, especially if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With spring coming up, pollen and mold are especially expected to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it circulating in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and stay healthy during allergy season.

Inspect your system or chat with your local HVAC expert for suggestions on how often you should be changing your filter. For many filters through J & J Air Conditioning, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter that is offered. Not sure if it’s the ideal time to exchange your air filter?
